International deal for documentary on ancient custom
AFILM about Padstow’s May Day ’Obby ’Oss tradition, one of Europe’s oldest customs, is coming to Newlyn Filmhouse.
Called King For A Day, the documentary includes rare archive film and photos which have seldom been seen before.
The film is being screened on Thursday, April 25, at 7.40pm followed by a question-and-answer session and will also be screened in London and Devon in the run-up to May Day.
Director Barbara Santi, of Awen Productions, said: “The film was shot over a period of nine years, under the shadow of Brexit.
“Not only does it tell the story of the families who have carried the incredible tradition over the decades and centuries, but it also shows the issues faced in a small coastal community, how tourism and second homes have affected them and the reason why the tradition is so important.
“It’s a real kick against society where, for that one day, they claim the town back for the Padstow people.”
King For A Day has been selected for a number of international film festivals and is being distributed in the USA by
Documentary Educational Resources, which picks only 12 films a year.
“Without the endorsement of the Padstow community this film would not have been possible”, Barbara said.
“I’ve had unprecedented access and it’s been the first time ever that the families have revealed insights about the custom which are not readily shared.
“It’s a deep map of the community and its extraordinary custom. By hearing people’s personal narratives, it gives the tradition even more significance, especially in today’s world where we are becoming more and more distanced from the environment around us.
“A film like this reminds us about what is important in life. It’s a film about friendship, family and celebration.
“I want to thank all those who have contributed to and supported the film, especially both ’Obby ’Oss parties, who do a fantastic job in bringing to life an ancient tradition passed down through the generations.
“Unlike many films, this project has been very collaborative. Once the archive licensing has been paid for, any financial proceeds will be split between us and the ’Obby ’Oss parties to ensure it’s supported for generations to come.”
