Fears spark changes at school

CHANGES TO parking outside an Angus primary school are to take place after safety concerns.

The c o u n c i l ’s infrastructure services committee agreed to relax waiting restrictions outside Woodlands Primary School in Carnoustie.

Parking by parents

at the school on Queen Street at the bend leading to Newton Road was causing congestion and reducing forward visibility for oncoming traffic.

The provision of “no waiting at any time” restrictions at the bend had been considered appropriate in the interest of pedestrian and traffic safety and free traffic flow.

However, Carnoustie councillor Helen Oswald raised a concern that stopping parking outside the school would encourage parents to drop their children in the car park, which was previously identified as being “high risk”.

Mrs Oswald spoke out after her constituents previously expressed concerns over pupil safety during the busy morning and afternoon periods.

“I know that previously parents were requested to stop driving into the school because of safety concerns,” she said.

“My worry would be that if we stop parents picking up and dropping off on Queen Street we will be putting the cars back into the school playground.”

Queen Street and Newton Road are among 14 locations in Angus where new waiting restrictions and alterations to existing restrictions have been given the backing of the infrastructure services committee.
