1877: The first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship was held. The only title being contested, the men’s singles, was won by Spencer Gore who beat his fellow Briton WC Marshall 6-1 6-2 6-4.
1954: Peter Thomson won the first of his five Open golf titles, and the first of three in successive years.
1982: Sir Ian Botham scored 200 runs in 219 balls against India at The Oval.
2003: Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger were awarded honorary OBEs for their contribution to British football.
2006: Top seed Roger Federer won the Wimbledon men’s singles title, beating second seed Rafael Nadal 6-0 7-6 (7/5) 6-7 (2/7) 6-3 on Centre Court.
2006: Italy won the World Cup, beating France 5-3 on penalties after the final finished 1-1 after extra time in Berlin as Zinedine Zidane’s career ended with a red card for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi.
2008: Mark Cavendish outsprinted his rivals to the finish line in Chateauroux to win stage five of the Tour de France.
2010: Cavendish won his second successive stage of the Tour de France with victory on stage six in Gueugnon.
2011: England’s cricketers beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs at Old Trafford to win the NatWest Series 3-2.
2012: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini agreed a new five-year contract.
He was sacked by the club 10 months later.
