PARK FIND: Not known if death is being treated as murder
A police investigation into skeletal remains found in a Glenrothes park continues today after officers said the body belongs to missing man Wayne Fleming.
However, Police Scotland last night refused to comment on whether the matter was being treated as a murder investigation.
Over the weekend it was confirmed that the remains found in Riverside Park on Tuesday of last week belonged to the 39-year-old, who was also known as Bagsy.
Detective Sergeant Sean Ferrier said: “We have now been able to identify the remains found in Glenrothes on Tuesday as Wayne Fleming.
“Officers have been in contact with Mr Fleming’s family since the discovery of the remains and we continue to offer our support to them during this very sad time.
“We have also informed the families of other local missing men from the Glenrothes area to make them aware of this development.”
The officer added that Mr Fleming’s family had now asked for privacy to grieve.
Mr Fleming had been the subject of an extensive missing persons inquiry and was last seen near his home in Glenrothes in March.
Yesterday police would not be drawn on the nature of the investigation into the tragedy.
A spokesman said Mr Fleming’s death was still being treated as unexplained.
Last month hopes were raised that he might be found safe and well when a man matching his description was seen in Leven town centre.
An appeal was launched after the man, believed to be Mr Fleming, was spotted on July 4 with a young woman.
At the time Inspector Derek Paxton said police were following up various lines of inquiry to reunite the missing man with his family.
