Demolition still on the agenda for former Laurencekirk school

The former Mearns Academy could be earmarked for demolition despite a community bid to buy it.

The future of the old school, shut since 2014, will be decided by Aberdeenshire Council’s policy and resources committee on Thursday.

Councillors are being asked to discuss tender contracts for the demolition of the school, as well as a bid from Laurencekirk Development Trust.

LDT chairman Mike Robson remains optimistic that the community disposal will be successful.

He said: “We are still pressing forward and talking to potential backers at the moment.”
