The recent spell of sunny weather for Tayside and Fife is set to end abruptly today.

A gloomy forecast from the Met Office is predicting that the sunshine will turn to torrential rain this afternoon.

The weather experts think there will be a dry start to the day, before the rain begins late morning and gets heavier as the day progresses.

Much of Scotland enjoyed bright sunshine yesterday but several ‘be aware’ warnings for rain were issued by the Met Office last night, including one for Central, Tayside and Fife areas.

Around 20mm of rain could fall within an hour across some parts of Britain.

The forecast for Courier Country today states: “A dry start with low cloud burning back to the coast. Showers will develop by late morning, turning heavy and thundery in the afternoon, with some locally torrential downpours.”

The forecast for the rest of the week predicts less sunshine tomorrow and Thursday and with an increased chance of rain on Friday.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkill said the “very warm conditions across the country” are allowing showers, thunder and hail to develop.

He added: “By Friday, it will turn a bit more unsettled and quite a bit cooler too.

“As bands of showers push their way from west to east, it will be quite a marked change from the last weekend where we had the fine and sunny weather.”
