A major operation swung into action in Glenrothes following a chemical spillage. More than 30 firemen took over six hours to deal with the incident, which involved highly corrosive caustic soda. Five fire appliances and the emergency support unit were involved as firemen cleared the spillage and washed vehicles. One person, believed to be a cyclist who fell from his machine, was given first aid treatment for skin irritation. Last night police were trying to trace the lorry responsibl­e.
