Summer of sport will be one to savour
What promises to be a fantastic summer of sport is about to begin.
Euro 2016 starts tomorrow, with the eyes of the continent trained on France.
Fans all over these isles will be among those following events most keenly, given the inclusion of not only perennial qualifiers England, but also Northern Ireland and Wales.
Rather a glaring omission comes in the form, of course, of Scotland’s absence.
Nevertheless, Scots don’t have too long to wait to get cheering, with the start of Wimbledon – with Andy Murray among the favourites – just a few weeks away.
Later in the summer, the Olympics will capture the imagination of countless millions as the world’s finest athletes strut their stuff on global sport’s biggest stage.
Sadly all of these flagship events will take place amid some of the tightest security ever seen.
Recent attacks, and chilling threats of more to follow, have been taken seriously and lessons learnt.
It is to be hoped all of the celebrations of sport live up to the lofty expectations, and are not spoilt by those hellbent on spreading terror.
The determination of fans to attend such spectacles remains undimmed, proof positive that those intent on hate and misery will never triumph over the indomitable human spirit.
