Above and beyond

“We live in a small community of homes where most people are pensioners,” writes John Cook. “One day last week we had a fire alarm ringing in one of the homes whose owner was out shopping.

“His neighbour called the emergency services and within 20 minutes the Police and Fire Brigade had arrived on the scene and attended to the matter at hand which could have resulted in the house going up in fire. One of the policemen badly gashed his arm while breaking in the door.

“The ‘band of pensioners’ thank the services for their prompt attention. Mr Frank Conway (crew manager of red watch) and his team from McAlpine Road fire station in Dundee did not leave it at that. The next day they returned to check over the homes on the site, bringing smoke detectors which they duly installed for us. They were making sure that we wouldn’t have a situation where an elderly person was left in any doubt as to what this alarm was there for.

“We would like to thank Frank and his team for their consideration for elderly people – they are to be commended for doing a fine job.”
