Aegon open Moore in quarter-finals
Tara Moore reached her first ever WTA Tour quarter-final and is the last Brit standing at the Aegon Open in Nottingham.
The 23-year-old, ranked 280 in the world, stunned eighth seed Christine McHale with a 6-2 6-2 victory – just her third main tour win.
Moore, still not assured of a place at Wimbledon, ran the American ragged with a powerful baseline performance on the grass and is enjoying a rich vein of form following her run to the final of the ITF event in Eastbourne last week.
Her 67-minute victory means she is the only hope of a home winner following the exit of Heather Watson, Laura Robson, Naomi Broady, Freya Christie and, earlier yesterday, British number one Johanna Konta.
Konta, now ranked 18 in the world, fell to a straight-sets defeat to Saisai Zheng after battling with a thigh injury.
The Chinese player, who Konta beat in her run to the Australian Open semi-final in January, exacted her revenge with a 6-4 7-5 success and will now face Moore in the last eight.
