Otaegui equals record

-

Spain’s Adrian Otaegui claimed the lead after the first round of the Lyoness Open as in-form Chris Wood had a disappointing start to the defence of his title in Austria.

Otaegui carded eight birdies in a flawless 64 at Diamond Country Club to equal the course record set in 2014 by American Daniel Im.

At eight under par the 23-yearold held a two-shot lead over Sweden’s Bjorn Akesson, with France’s Gary Stal and South African Zander Lombard a shot further back on five under.

Wood found water off the tee on the eighth and ninth in his 71.

Scott Jamieson was top Scot on three under after a round of 69, one better than Scott Henry.

David Drysdale and Marc Warren were one over, while Andrew McArthur was two shots back after a 75, and Richie Ramsay and Jamie Mcleary shot 77s.

Meanwhile, European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke has withdrawn from next week’s US Open at Oakmont. Clarke, who has not recorded a top-10 finish on the European Tour since winning the Open Championship in 2011, said he is dedicating all of his time to preparations for the Ryder Cup.
