Milnathort athlete Laura Muir had a happy return to the Bislett Stadium in Oslo for the Diamond League, setting a Scottish record for the classic mile.

Having won the 1,500m in Oslo last year, the Dundee Hawkhill Harrier was second to Faith Kipyegon after a brave battle with the Kenyan which took the pair away from the field.

With the chasing pack six seconds adrift, Kipyego clocked a world lead of 4:18.60.

Muir’s 4:19.12 was well inside the 4:22.64 set by Yvonne Murray in 1994, and was the fastest mile by a UK woman for 30 years.

Her coach Andy Young said: “That was a great run in cold, damp conditions, a massive new Scottish record, and I am sure Yvonne Murray will be delighted Laura is the one to break it.

“It’s important that we try and ensure we translate this form into a great performance in Rio. “

Daffne Schippers (Netherlands) set a Diamond League record and world lead of 21.93 in the 200m. St Albans athlete Jodie Williams was sixth in 23.29.

Dream Mile winner Asbel Kiprop ran a solo effort to clock 3:51.49 as fellow Kenyan Elijah Manangol was the best of a blanket finish to claim second in 3:52.04. Charlie Grice (Brighton Phoenix) was a shade outside his personal best, placing sixth in 3:52.85.

Meanwhile 40-year-old Kim Collins (St Kitts & Nevis) led the 100m before pulling up and hobbling over the line clutching his hamstring. Rising star Andre de Grasse (Canada) clocked a winning season’s best of 10.07, edging out Michael Rodgers (USA) 10.09.

Liverpool Harrier Anyika Onuora was fourth in the 400m in 51.85, with winner Stephenie McPherson (Jamaica) timed at 51.04.

UK 100m hurdles record holder Tiffany Porter was fourth in 12.94. Brianna Rollins (USA) won in 12.56.

UK long jump record holder Shara Proctor was third with 6.67m as winner Ivana Spanovic (Serbia) went out to 6.94m.

Joe Kovacs (USA) won the shot put with 22.01m, while Konrad Bukowiecki (Poland) set a world junior record of 21.14m to take second place.
