Top-10 finish leaves Hatton up in the air
Tyrrell Hatton insists the Ryder Cup is not on his agenda despite another impressive performance in a major at the US PGA Championship.
The Englishman followed his second place in the Scottish Open with a share of fifth the following week at the Open at Royal Troon and finished tied 10th at Baltusrol alongside Paul Casey.
That run of results has lifted the 24-year-old to ninth on the European Points List and 14th on the World Points List, less than 35 points behind Matt Fitzpatrick in the final automatic qualifying place.
“To be honest, it’s not going through my mind,” said Hatton, who carded three rounds in the 60s at Baltusrol after an opening 71.
“One day it would be great to play a Ryder Cup – that’s what all the European lads want to do. It’s not something that I’m thinking about. I’m just trying to play the best I can and everything else takes care of itself.”
Hatton admits he would have to reconsider his schedule if he produces another good performance this week, having secured a place in the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship with his top-10 finish.
“I think my girlfriend might be a little bit disappointed, though,” added Hatton, who was 121st in the world in April but has now climbed to a careerhigh of 52nd. “We had planned five days in New York. That would have been nice, but obviously it will be nice to play a PGA event as well.
“I was planning on having four weeks off after this week. I was going to play Switzerland (the week after Ryder Cup qualifying finishes). Things are a little bit up in the air now.”
