Angus man jailed for scalding water attack on prisoner

-

An Angus man hurled boiling water towards a fellow inmate as he showered at Perth prison.

Paul Halliday, of Glenclova Place, Montrose, was jailed in 1996 for murder.

Along with his then 14-yearold brother Andrew he kicked 26-year-old Scott Fraser to death in Carronshore, near Falkirk.

At Perth Sheriff Court Halliday pled guilty to culpably and recklessly throwing boiling water, which struck Lee Wright and caused him injury on February 20 last year.

Fiscal depute Carol Whyte told the court: “At 8.50am Lee Wright was having a shower when the accused came in with a kettle concealed behind his back.

“As he passed the doorway he threw boiling water into the area.

“The water struck Lee Wright on his back and the back of his head. A nearby prison officer provided first aid and he was then taken to hospital.

“He was found to have an area of very red skin on his back and shoulders, and superficial blistering.

“There was also reddening behind his ears.

“The blistered area was dressed and healed well.”

Solicitor Nick Whelan, representing the 43-year-old, said Halliday had not known Wright was in the shower when he tossed the water in.

He said Wright had given Halliday’s friend tobacco and threatened Halliday when it was not returned.

“At the time of this incident he’d been at liberty for one year and struggled to deal with the prison regime after that time.”

Sheriff William Wood jailed Halliday for 58 weeks, backdated to May.
