Yeats can lord it at Hamilton

tips: Magical Effect in prospect for punters at Thirsk

- The Ferret

LORD YEATS

was perhaps a bit unlucky at Ascot last time, but compensation awaits in the Ladbrokes Lanark Silver Bell Handicap at Hamilton.

Ridden by Kenichi Ikezoe as part of the Shergar Cup competition, Lord Yeats blazed an early trail and was unsurprisingly reeled back in with a couple of furlongs still to run before finishing down the field.

It was a shame that run arrested what had been a progressive profile.

While he does appear to prefer racing in a prominent position, a slightly more conservative effort in the plate might play to his strengths a little better.

MAGICAL EFFECT

can mark himself as a lively contender for next month’s Western meeting at Ayr by landing the Theakston Lightfoot Handicap at Thirsk.

His current rating of 77 would see him struggle to make the Ayr Gold Cup itself, but Ruth Carr has a few weeks to get to work on that issue, starting with this six-furlong affair.

Formerly with Charlie Appleby, Magical Effect finished no worse than fourth in three starts last year but, having shown little star quality, he was shipped out of the Godolphin team for just £10,000 at the end of last term.

Given he cost 180,000 guineas as a yearling, he was something of a bargain buy and after finishing second on his first two outings for the Carr team, he finally came good at this track last time.
