Man charged after alleged assault near students’ union

A teenager has been charged following an alleged assault outside a university venue in May.

Police Scotland launched an appeal shortly after the incident took place, asking for the public’s help in connection with an alleged attack outside the entrance to Dundee Students’ Union.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed the arrest of a 19-year-old.

They said: “Police Scotland can confirm that a man has been arrested in connection with an assault which allegedly happened at Dundee University Students’ Union on May 8.

“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

Indre Urbanaviciute, president of Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA), said she was pleased to hear an arrest had been made in connection with the alleged attack.

She said: “We take the safety of students in the union very seriously.”

The police appeal to the public came after a 20-year-old man required hospital treatment for a “serious” facial injury following an incident on the grassy area outside the union building.

Police released CCTV footage from the night of the incident during their inquiry.

DUSA highlight their awards for keeping students safe on their website, and claim to be the “number one” place in Scotland for “student experience”.

The institute, which runs the students’ union bars and clubs, and represent students attending the university, has won multiple awards for being a “student value venue”.

The union building has a number of facilities for students, including three bars, two nightclubs, several eating establishments and a swimming pool.
