Local vocal talents shine at Perform in Perth festival

Angus competitor­s fared well in the latest day of Perform in Perth.

Duncan Hunter from Carnoustie and Heather Gourlay from Forfar almost cleaned up in the solo vocal competitio­ns.

And Tasmin Glass from Kirriemuir won the adult competitiv­e aria solo in opera, despite only turning 18 three days earlier.

Perform in Perth adjudicato­r Liz Childs made a plea for funding to ensure the next generation of musicians thrive.

“Music education is a vital part of everybody’s education,” said the adjudicato­r for the British and Internatio­nal Federation of Festivals.

“I am very concerned about the effect of cuts on musical education.”

She praised the two-week event, which draws to a close today in St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church with vocal solos.

“This is a fantastic festival and a great opportunit­y for young musicians to perform and enjoy the experience,” she said. Angus results as follows: Vocal solo, baritone, aged 18 and over – 1 Duncan Hunter, Carnoustie (86).

Vocal solo opera (aria), aged 18 and over – 1 Tasmin Glass, Kirriemuir (88); 2 (equal) Heather Gourlay, Sarah Gilbertson, Burrelton (87); 3 Duncan Hunter (86).
