SNP hit out at lack of ‘gender balance’
The leader of the SNP group, Lynne Devine, has criticised the lack of gender balance in the new administration.
After being defeated in the vote for provost and vice-provost, Forfar councillor Ms Devine, said she felt the new administration didn’t “reflect the people of Angus”.
Only one of the 18 councillors who have formed the new administration is female, Arbroath East and Lunan member Lois Speed.
The provost, leader and all the council’s committee conveners are male.
Addressing the new provost, Ronnie Proctor, she said: “On behalf of the SNP group I would like to congratulate you and your deputy on your election. I would also like to congratulate the administration on being able to form one.
“We tried very hard to find partners and would have loved to have formed a new administration for the sake of continuity at this pretty difficult time, particularly in light of the superb work officers started during the last administration.
“I would like to assure you that we will be constructive in opposition and a critical friend.”
She added: “I wish you well and hope we agree more than we disagree over the next five years.”
