Talented young engineers power to success at national event

-

Aspiring Angus boffins have overcome some of the country’s brightest young engineering brains to bag a top award.

The youngsters from Monifieth High School’s Young Engineers’ Club were among 300 pupils from 50 Scottish schools who got stuck into science at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) celebration in the impressive surroundings of Glasgow Science Centre.

The event was run by Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC), a project of the SCDI, with support from partners Chevron, Lloyd’s Register, OPITO and the Royal Navy.

Teams were able to showcase their own projects to an expert panel of judges, as well as taking part in hands-on, STEM challenges against the clock and the Monifieth youngsters highlighted successes including F1 in Schools, robotics and the IET Faraday Challenge.

The judges were so impressed that they awarded the top prize of Secondary Club of the Year to the Angus secondary, bringing with it a trophy and £500 for STEM resources.

SCDI chief executive Mark Bevan said: “Scotland has a long history of innovation in science and engineering which has lit up and transported people and ideas across the globe, making us safer, healthier and better connected. Congratulations are due to Monifieth High for their pupils’ obvious hard work on these great projects.”
