Livestock under the hammer

Caledonian Marts Ltd sold 1,957 prime lambs, ewes and tups yesterday. Prime lambs (1,373) averaged 195.6ppkg (+18.3ppkg on the week) (+9.7p on the year). All classes of lambs especially 42 kilo plus were sharer on the week. Top price of the day went to G Whyte, Pett, Muthill, for a 50 kilo Beltex X lamb at £111. Top price per kilo went to Doune Farms, West Lundie, at 232ppkg for a pair of Beltex lambs at 47 kilos. Also forward were 584 cast ewes, tups and wedders. Heavy ewes (139) ave £81.24 selling to £134 for a Texel from R McNee, Woodend, Armadale. Export ewes (254) ave £48.98 (+£1.88). Although with a plainer show of ewes forward the overall average was up £6.05.
