A transformation of Dundee’s transport network includes a relocated train station and new trunk road around the city.

The proposals are contained in a document released by Dundee City Council which will inform future planning decisions.

Although they are the domain of the city council, their determination will have a knock-on effect in neighbouring Perth and Kinross and Angus.

A number of infrastructure proposals are named in the Local Development Plan, including the transport developments.

Improving the infrastructure and connectivity, both regionally and nationally, of the city’s rail network has been identified as a potential boon for Dundee’s development.

A study into how easy it would be to relocate Invergowrie train station to a new, Dundee west station has taken place as part of the wider Tay Estuary rail study.

According to the development plan proposals, the early stages of a business case for the relocation of the station has already been carried out.

Further to this, the plan hopes to identify park and ride facilities for commuters and visitors to the city, with locations at Riverside, Forfar Road, Monifieth and the Fife side of the Tay Road Bridge. Exact spots have not yet been designated.

The plan states having these facilities would allow users to transfer between private and public modes of transport, also providing charging points for electric vehicles.

A route still has to be identified for any potential new ring road, which would see the Kingsway replaced as the main thoroughfare through the city.

The action programme has identified the need for a new trunk road for the A90, creating a new route around the city in the north west, as well as upgrading the current highway.

It has previously been suggested it would link the A90 near Invergowrie to a new junction in the Tealing area, north of the city.

The Local Development Plan, which was adopted by the local authority in 2013, is a land use strategy which guides planning and development decisions in the Dundee City Council area.

It will be subject to a consultation period and will then be used as a guide until the late 2020s.
