Serial offender jailed for sex attack in prison

COURT: Jack Mackay, 61, whose offences date back to 1976, pleaded guilty

- James mulholland

A notorious pervert who sexually abused a fellow prisoner has been jailed for two years and eight months.

Jack Mckay, 61, attacked the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in Perth Prison in July 2017 whilst serving a 32-month stretch for indecent exposure.

The serial offender, who has more than a dozen convictions for sexual offences, wrapped his legs around his 28-year-old victim before trying to remove his underwear.

Mckay – whose first conviction for sexual misconduct dates back to 1976 – then repeatedly touched the man before he attempted to perform a sex act on him.

Mckay pleaded guilty to sexual assault at Perth Sheriff Court in December 2017.

Sheriff William Wood thought that the offence and his previous record was too serious for the sheriff court so the offender was sent to the high court.

Sheriff Wood thought that Mckay – who was made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order in 2012 – might be eligible for an order for lifelong restriction and only released into the community once the parole board is satisfied he no longer poses a risk to public safety.

On Thursday judge Lady Scott decided that Mckay didn’t meet the criteria for an OLR disposal and jailed him for two years and eight months.

Mckay is also to be supervised for five years following his release and was told he would be on licence for that period and if he committed another offence, he could be sent back to prison.
