Brechin still crave elusive first victory

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 3 BRECHIN CITY 1

Sean Crighton admits it will be embarrassing if Brechin go through an entire Championship season without a victory.

City suffered their 18th defeat in 22 league games at Palmerston on Saturday as Stephen Dobbie’s hat-trick earned Queens a first home win in two months.

Brechin are 19 points adrift of safety and even the most optimistic supporter will realise that a miracle is required for their team to avoid relegation.

However, just recording a league win will be at the forefront of the minds of manager Darren Dods and his players with Crighton confirming that they must get off the mark.

He said: “We’ve all spoken about it and you don’t want that embarrassment.

“It’s not far away and I keep saying that but there are certain areas where we need to improve.

“We’ve come close and we maybe just need to give that wee bit extra. I don’t know if it’s a case of thinking we’re already down but it shouldn’t be. We need to go away and think about it. The gaffer’s said that to us.

“We need to look in the mirror and ask if we’ve played well.

“I think we’re capable of performing better as we’ve played well against good teams in this league. We have ability but we need to believe in ourselves more collectively.

“Mistakes are killing us and you can’t afford to do that in this league.”

Dobbie struck twice in the opening 12 minutes for Queens before adding a third with onloan Hearts midfielder Callumn Morrison’s late goal little consolation for City.

“Conceding one or two goals in the first 15 minutes of games is not good enough and we’ve all got to take our share of the blame,” Crighton added.

“We’re not giving ourselves a chance but there is only one way to fix it and that is do better in the next game.”

Dods: said “I thought Callumn was excellent making his debut after coming in on loan. I’m hopeful that we can get another couple in.”
