New recruits wanted to join older people for baking and a blether

-

A lifeline charity for older people in Angus and the Mearns is appealing for new recruits.

Contact the Elderly says it needs volunteer drivers to commit a few hours a month to make “an immeasurable difference” to the lives of older people who live alone in Laurencekirk, Fettercairn, Brechin and Friockheim.

The charity, which provides tea, cake and company to older people in Aberdeenshire and Angus, is also asking for volunteer hosts to open the doors to their homes once or twice a year.

It is also hoping to extend its pool of tea party hosts and hostesses to groups operating in Carnoustie and Tealing.

Lorna Dunbar, support officer at Contact the Elderly, said the charity’s free parties, which take place on one Sunday afternoon a month, were hugely enjoyable for all concerned.

She said: “Our groups are well-loved by our guests and volunteers.

“We now need to bring some new people into the fold so we can continue to provide hospitality with heart to older people in the area who are living on their own.”

She said the time commitment was very small but the rewards were massive for the volunteers, as well as for the guests.

“Who doesn’t enjoy an afternoon spent enjoying a bit of baking and a blether?” she added.

“If you would like to make a real difference in 2018, then we would urge you to consider volunteering.”
