More than 2,000 speeding fines in three months on A90 stretch

-

Around 23 drivers a day are being caught speeding on the A90 between Dundee and Stonehaven.

New figures revealed motorists have racked up more than 2,000 speeding offences in three months on the stretch.

The figures released by Safety Cameras Scotland show 2,124 offences took place, with 921 motorists receiving fixed penalty notices – with three points added to their licence and a £100 fine.

It means drivers racked up at least £92,100 in fines on the route in the three-month period.

The data showed 118 people were also reported to the procurator fiscal.

Chief Inspector Stewart Mackie, road policing commander for the area, said: “The average speed camera network on the A90 has led to a dramatic increase in compliance by drivers on the stretch between Dundee and Stonehaven since it became operational on October 31 last year.

“Despite this, a number of drivers continue to drive at inappropriate speeds. The cameras are doing their job by picking this up and issuing fixed penalty notices, or if their speed is very high they are reported to the procurator fiscal.

“We have not reduced the number of road policing units since the cameras became operational, and this is now allowing us to concentrate on tackling other forms of road related crime.”

The new £2 million system was installed in November in a bid to reduce deaths on the main road connecting Aberdeen and Dundee.

It was ordered by ministers after three fatal collisions and six others involving serious injuries on the dual carriageway in 2015.
