Preferred junction for A90 at Laurencekirk ready to be revealed

- GRAHAM BROWN

The preferred option for the longawaited junction on the A90 at Laurencekirk is to be revealed to the local community this month.

At a public event on July 20, transport chiefs will officially reveal which of three designs has been identified as the best solution for the £24 million pound improvement scheme on the notorious stretch.

Consultation events were held last year to allow the opportunity for comment on the designs – two involving the creation of a grade separated crossing at the dual carriageway’s deadly meeting point with the A937, and the third a planned realignment of that route to a flyover at the north end of the town.

Dickson Memorial Hall in Laurencekirk will host the public exhibitions this month and again on Friday August 24 from noon to 7pm.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson said: “Having put a number of options for the planned improvements at Laurencekirk on display last year and considered the feedback following the public exhibition, we are now able to let the public see and comment on the preferred option that has been identified for this much-needed upgrade.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to attend the exhibitions in July or August or view the material online and give us their views.

“All comments received will be considered as we look to publish draft orders for the scheme next year.”

Years of campaigning by locals eventually led to the promise of improvements at the dangerous A90/A937 junction.

Angus North and Mearns MSP Mairi Gougeon said: “This is very significant stage of the Laurencekirk development.

“It underlines that progress is being made and I hope this will reassure the public of the Scottish Government’s commitment towards this project.

“But it’s absolutely crucial that as many people who use the junction or live in the surrounding areas come along and have their say.

“Their voice really matters.”
