Stalwart Andy honoured for his devotion to Scouting Association

-

Angus Scouting stalwart Andy Menmuir has received the British Empire Medal awarded to him in the New Year Honour’s list for what has been described as an “extraordinary” commitment to the movement.

For more than half a century, Mr Menmuir has been at the forefront of Scouting at Tannadice and within the organisation in Angus, having been a member of the troop before becoming an adult leader in 1964.

He was assistant Scout leader for eight years before taking on the post of Scout leader and then group Scout leader.

Mr Menmuir’s commitment has also extended into key roles associated with the busy Jock Neish Centre at Tannadice, a facility that has hosted visits for Scouts from across the globe over the years.

He has also helped on international trips to Switzerland, Paris and London for Cubs and Scouts as well as organising hospitality for a group of people from Kiev who were looking to introduce Scouting to their country.

At the Tannadice presentation, Angus Lord Lieutenant Georgiana Osborne said: “He is a dependable and trusted member of the association, liked by all of the young people who he has helped over the years and is a friend to all of the adults he has met in the various roles he has undertaken.

“His contribution to the community over the years is inestimable and his guidance to others has enhanced the life chances of many young men awarded the Silver Acorn in 2007 in recognition of his work.”

Mrs Osborne added: “His years of service to the Scouts has been an inspiration to many.

“Over the years he has given selflessly of his time and experience in helping both young and old at events, company meetings and classes.”

In 2007, Mr Menmuir was awarded Scouting’s prestigious Silver Acorn, and as a long-serving qualified first aider has been part of a Forfar team providing cover at events including local fetes, matches at the town’s Station Park and music festivals such as T in the Park.
