Great alarm was caused by an outbreak of fire in Broughty Ferry early yesterday morning. About three o’clock the tenants in the vicinity discovered that fire had broken out in the shop in Brook Street occupied by Mr J.A. Rodger, photographer. They immediately raised the alarm by shouting “Murder”, “Police” and the Broughty Ferry Fire Brigade arrived on the scene and attacked the blaze. After a short and sharp struggle the firemen succeeded in getting the flames under control. Argentinian golfer Roberto de Vicenzo, the Open champion, and last-minute stand-in, Bobby Cole, South Africa, tied dramatically for the Roosevelt Nine Nations Trophy at Barry yesterday with a record 65. A crowd of about 2,000 saw Cole pull off a dramatic tie with a tremendous birdie three at the 18th. Earlier there had been more drama when George Will, the only Scot exempted from qualifying for the Open, tore up his card at the 17th. Roberto was playing under the handicap of a sore left hand. A Dundee woman has hit out at the district’s leisure and recreation department over play equipment which she says almost caused the death of her son. Lyn Matthew of Charleston complained after her son John,4, fell and was left hanging from the neck in a rope climbing frame. Mrs Matthew reported the accident, but is adamant she has not heard from the council. A council spokesman said that vandals had attached an extra rope to the frame which has since been removed. St Johnstone are out of Europe after throwing everything at FK Trakai to no effect. A late Maksim Maksimov goal put an unfair complexion on the tie, which finished 3-1 over the two legs, as Saints had exerted the type of control in the second leg that was lacking in the first. Added to clearcut chances squandered in Perth were a few more in Lithuania but Saints manager Tommy Wright was more frustrated about their final ball than their finishing at the LFF Stadium.
