A Brechin all-weather pitch has again been the target of vandals, raising fears the popular community facility could be closed.

The attack comes after the Inch Maintenance and Preservation Society (Imps) took over caring for the site following a successful fundraising campaign supported by businesses and residents.

With assistance from Angus Council, Imps and its supporters got the pitch back into shape, however, the area has been hit by vandals several times.

Those responsible for the latest attack broke padlocks and left smashed glass strewn across the pitch.

Imps blasted the vandals in a statement, saying: “If it was not for this group the community would not have the use of the astro pitch, which is maintained monthly to have the pitch useable by your children.

“To have the padlocks broken again and the gate left open, have glass broken on the pitch, the wire broken, this all costs money at the charity’s expense and if this continues we will not be allowing the use of the pitch any more.

“We are at the moment trying to think of ways to raise funds so Imps can continue in the community providing toilets, paddling pool through the summer and the astro all year round, which all costs money so please help us to stop the vandalism and help raise money.”

The pitch was previously vandalised in June, when the surrounding fence at the town’s Inch Park was cut open and a set of goalposts were torn down.

Brechin and Edzell Independent councillor Bob Myles slammed those responsible for the attacks.

“I’m appalled that this has happened again and I am disgusted by this behaviour,” he said.

“I really do have to question the mentality of people who do this and I can’t imagine what they think they are doing when they deliberately cause damage in this way.

“It has taken a huge amount of hard work by dedicated volunteers to get the park facilities up and running again, and it is shocking that their commendable efforts have been undermined yet again.

“The fact is that someone knows who is responsible for this damage, and I would urge them to come forward with any information.”
