The Premier League started with a vengeance on Saturday and there were good results for the top two promoted clubs,

Lowson United had an outstanding campaign in both the league and all the cup competitions last season and their 6-1 victory at home to Invergowrie suggests they are ready for action and will be competitive in the top division.

A Marc Godfrey hat-trick and singles by Rory Crichton, Marc Mcintosh and Scott Fullerton ensured they bagged all three points.

After holding on against AHSFP in midweek to win 3-2 after leading 3-0, last season’s Division 1 winners Montrose were put to the test when entertaining prolific silverware collectors Menzieshill AFC.

A 2-2 draw against the dual North of Tay Cup winners was therefore a highly creditable result. Graham Bell and an own goal for the home side was evened out by Barry Mann and Owen Neave for Hill. After their 3-2 midweek defeat, Arbroath High School felt further pain losing out 8-0 to Tayside Fire Brigade at home. Marksmen for the victors were Sean Hearn (4), Tom Casey (2), Graeme French and an own goal.

The most attractive match in the Premier was the Lochee United v Broughty United contest with both teams looking as if they will finish nearer the top of the league than the bottom when next May arrives.

In a good game a 1-1 draw seemed to suit both sides. Liam Nugent for Lochee and Ryan Carling for Broughty had a point to make with fine strikes.

The final Premier match of the day, between Morgan Academy FP and Carnoustie Panmure YM, definitely produced more goals than the other games and probably had more incidents built in as well.

The former pupils seemed to be well in charge when they made it 3-0 with 20 minutes to go but they allowed their opponents to counter straight away and then found themselves 4-3 down with 10 minutes left.

Late efforts from Neal Bone and Lewis Ritchie produced a Craigie 3G 5-4 victory for the school side. Earlier a brace from Steve Smith and another for Bone had set up the hosts but they almost blew it. The final section 2 Fairfield Sports and Leisure cup tie between Barnhill and Fintry AFC ended 2-2 and ensured the latter would move through to the semi-finals.

But this was a great result for the Monifieth-based side who led twice through Robbie Whyte and David Salisbury.

In Division 1 Newport beat Finavon 2-0.
