Volunteers knit poppy display

-

Members of Tulliallan and Kincardine Church and villagers have created a display of more than 3,500 poppies knitted by congregation members and friends.

It was the idea of Elder Rayna Lumsden whose father was a Second World War veteran.

Some 56 knitters and crocheters made the vision a reality after four months of painstaking work.

The church will be open from 2-4pm today to allow members of the public to see the display.

On Remembrance Sunday volunteers from groups including the Scouts, Boys’ Brigade, community council, masonic lodge and local history group will take turns to ring the church bell.

• The official opening of the Dall’s Lane memorial garden in Brechin will take place at 2pm on Sunday. The garden features a marble globe by stonemason Tommy Church which reminds Brechiners of the 300 men from Brechin, 144 from Montrose Street, who died during or as a result of the war. Brechin in Bloom will also unveil a new sculpture by Karen Eliot in memory of the millions of horses that died.

• Cellardyke will pay silent tribute to its war dead on Remembrance Sunday with a quiet citizens’ walk, starting at 2pm. Walkers will stand outside the houses where the fallen once lived at 2pm and join the walk as it passes. The walk begins in two places – The Manse in Toll Road and at Harbourhead – and will join at 2.20pm at Cellardyke Town Hall for a simple commemoration. Wreaths will be laid at Cellardyke and Kilrenny War Memorial. People are invited to join the walk at any time or go straight to the Town Hall.

• Inchture Kirk will mark this weekend’s Armistice Day with a poignant display of around 4,000 poppies – each handmade. Members of neighbouring churches in Abernyte, Kinnaird and Longforgan have helped the congregation to reach the huge figure. A ceremony will be held on Sunday when locals can view the display. The service will begin on Sunday at 6.05am with a piper. At 9.30am a remembrance service will take place at the church’s war memorial, before the usual service at 9.45am. A bugler will play the Last Post at 6.55pm and the church bell will be rung at 7.05pm.

• Crafters across the world have contributed to a display of poppies at the Abbey Church of Dunfermline. More than 4,000 poppies have poured in to the church since plans for a special art installation were launched in June. The Abbey Choristers will perform the Armed Man tomorrow and the church will be open to the public from 10am to noon and on Monday from 2pm to 4pm. The church will also host special services on Remembrance Day at 9.30am and 11.30am and a festival of remembrance on November 17 at 7pm.
