Spotlight on the Overgate
The Overgate Centre was built in the 1960s to replace buildings erected in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Most of the original structure, for example the Angus Hotel, was then demolished and redeveloped from 1998 to 2000.
Our first image dates from the 1960s and shows the construction of the new centre under way as people go about their business.
Note the huge advertisements for cigarettes and beer – you wouldn’t see those now!
The next image was taken back in October 1959 – it’s the old Overgate market in full swing. It looks like one of today’s boot sales.
The third photo, from 1977, depicts Birrell’s shoe shop which, we think, was along to the left from Wm Low supermarket – are we correct?
The final photo was taken in 1984 and shows a young man hard at work cleaning the centre. It’s quiet so maybe it was taken in the morning. He’s standing outside what is now Bodycare.
We would love to hear your memories of the Overgate, both pre- and post-1960s. Just get in touch at
