Dundee group battling to rescue £10,000 dream break in Florida

- SCOTT MILNE

A Dundee family has been left making emergency plans to save a £10,000 holiday because of the Thomas Cook collapse.

David Barrie was preparing to jet off to Florida with his family next week.

The family-of-six had already spent the eye-watering amount when all expenses had been taken into account.

It included about £3,000 on tickets for rides and attractions at sites such as Disney World and Universal Studios.

Faced with losing out on the £3,000 worth of tickets if they did not make it to Florida on the same dates, they have hastily booked alternative flights with Virgin Atlantic.

David is set to travel with his wife, their two children, David’s brother and mother.

David said: “I’m sure we will get our money back for flights, but it’s the not knowing how long that will take that is the thing.”

“We thought we would be organised and pay for rides ahead of time, but that wasn’t for the best this time.”

The family have also recently booked two other holidays for 2020 through Thomas Cook – Mexico in July and Tunisia in October.

David added: “There was already some talk of a potential collapse when we booked the latest one.

“My mother was booking one in the City Square shop and she was asking the staff if they had heard anything, but they didn’t know what was going on. It’s a real shame about them losing their jobs.”

A deposit of £1,000 for each holiday was put down, but David is confident he will get a refund on that.

Dundee woman Lynn Anderson was also set to fly out on holiday next week, flying out to Turkey with her partner.

The nine-night holiday had set Lynn and her partner back £800, but they are now not sure if they will make it.

She said: “We will have to try and get other flights booked at the last minute now. I am worried.”
