Bid to make lamb the St Andrew’s Day dish

MEAT: Farmers urged to get behind the idea to boost sales of Scotch Lamb which was first proposed in 2010

Farmers are being asked to reignite a campaign urging people to make Scotch Lamb the national dish for St Andrew’s Day.

United Auctions (UA), which operates auction marts all over Scotland including Stirling, Huntly, Lairg and South Uist, is urging its customers to encourage friends, family and neighbours in the rural community to put lamb on the menu on November 30.

“We want to remind people to serve Scotch Lamb on Scotland’s national day,” said UA managing director George Purves.

“It’s a natural product rich in protein and nutrients that support good health and wellbeing – and that’s down to the hard work and commitment by Scotland’s farmers who produce it.”

He said the company was offering clubs, schools and organisati­ons the chance to apply to receive one of 10 locally-sourced lambs if they want to host a St Andrew’s Day celebratio­n.

UA prime sheep auctioneer Peter Wood said: “We want lamb to become synonymous with St Andrew’s Day, just as haggis is for Burns Night.”

He said Perthshire pub, the Kirkstyle Inn at Dunning, had already signed up to the Lamb for St Andrew’s Day campaign.

The pub’s owner, Jamie Harrison, said: “I’m proud to be the first to support this important campaign. With its versatilit­y and depth of flavour, Scotch Lamb really is a chef’s favourite.”

The UA campaign coincides with a six-week marketing campaign – Scotch Lamb, Naturally – launched yesterday by Quality Meat Scotland.
