KENYAN TRIUMPHS

Veteran Kenyan athlete Isaiah Kosgei made it a case of third time lucky after winning the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon.

The 44-year-old African was third last year before his triumph yesterday. Sporting the colours of Metro Aberdeen, Kosgei clocked two hours, 29 minutes and 31 seconds in the wet conditions, well outside the course record of 2:20.13 set by compatriot Simon Tonui a decade ago.

Nick Harris-fry (Orion Harriers) finished second in 2:36:30 while Ed Rees (Sinn Allstars) took third in 2:37:09.

Katie White (Garscube Harriers) smashed the women’s course record in a time of 2:42: 04. She won the Scottish half marathon title in Glasgow a week ago and finished second at the Inverness half marathon in March, an event she won last year. Kerry Prise (Metro Aberdeen) finished second woman in yesterday’s marathon in 2:52:34 while 2018 winner Sheena Logan (Fife AC) was third in 2:54:24.

James Donald (Dundee Hawkhill) finished third in the associated 10km in 30.41 behind winner Cameron Strachan (Metro Aberdeen) in 30.31. Teenager Megan Keith (34.42) scored a shock women’s win over title-holder and three-time previous winner Jenny Bannerman (Inverness) in 35.11.

Dundee Hawkhill Harriers won the Fife Coastal Path six-man 116-mile race in a time of 14:50:46. PH Racing Club, Dunfermline, finished second in 14:54:58 and Portobello Running Club third in 15:08:31.

CURLING

MUIRHEAD BOWS OUT Perthshire curler Glen Muirhead pushed world champion Niklas Edin to the limit before bowing out of the Swiss Cup in yesterday’s quarterfinals in Basel.

Muirhead, brother Thomas and fellow siblings Kyle and Cammy Smith bounced back from Friday night’s defeat to Olympic bronze medallist Peter De Cruz by scoring three big wins on Saturday as they clinched a last-eight spot. Their 4-3 extra-end victory over Murrayfield’s European champion Bruce Mouat was the highlight, but the draw then pitted them against holder Edin. The Scots came from two stones down to level at 2-2, but the Swedish legend pulled away again to win 4-2. Muirhead and his team will be back on home ice when they compete in this week’s European Playdowns at the Dewars Centre in Perth.
