Watson lets leads slip to lose final

-

Britain’s Heather Watson was beaten in the Tianjin Open final as Rebecca Peterson won her second WTA title.

The Swede, who opened her account by winning last month’s Nanchang Open, recovered from an early break in each set to win 6-4 6-4 in an hour and 38 minutes.

Some powerful hitting helped world number 59 Peterson take the first set, breaking Watson in game nine before closing it out in just under an hour.

Watson responded and led with a break in game two, but once again she immediately squandered the advantage, this time after a double fault to set up break point.

She was broken again in her next service game to trail 3-2, which became 5-3 to leave Watson serving to stay in the match.

She did so, forcing Peterson to serve it out, but a comfortable hold to 15 completed a straightsets win.

● Daniil Medvedev claimed his second straight Masters Series title with a 6-4 6-1 win over Alexander Zverev in Shanghai.

The 23-year-old Russian fended off five of six break points to secure his first win over Zverev in five attempts.

Medvedev, who was competing in his sixth straight tournament final, also won the Rogers Cup in Montreal in August.

● Fifteen-year-old Coco Gauff won her first WTA title as she beat Jelena Ostapenko in the Upper Austria Ladies Linz final.

The American teenager, who caught the eye at Wimbledon this year by beating Venus Williams en route to the last 16, won a topsy-turvy final 6-3 1-6 6-2.
