Messrs Donnet and Mcnicoll addressed a large gathering in Bonnethill UF Church Hall, Dundee, last night in support of their candidatur­e for the Fifth Ward. Mr Donnet said that it had been stated to him by experts that the Dundee gas at the present time should be one-half the price it previously was, in view of the up-todate nature of the plant at the works. He contended the community should have full control of the harbour affairs. Mr Mcnicoll said the Hilltown tram service was not satisfacto­ry.

Mr Edward Heath attacked the Prime Minister on the first debate of the new Parliament­ary session yesterday, for turning government into a “cynical farce”. During discussion of the Queen’s Speech, the Leader of the Opposition said that by its capitulati­ons over strike sanctions and failure to legislate on wages, it became known that “this Government was a pushover for anybody who liked to give it a shove.” To loud Tory cheers, he said industrial unrest was a direct result of the Government’s policy.

A convicted poisoner has created a storm after being sent to work in the prison’s kitchen. Fife man Angus Lamb, who poisoned his father and brother, was put in the kitchens at Saughton jail, Edinburgh, when he started his sentence this week. Prison officers quickly removed him from duties after details of his conviction came to light. Inmates, however, have criticised them for letting 27-year-old Lamb prepare their food. A source at the prison said: “It was simply an oversight. Security is very tight and nobody was put at risk.”

Amid “shocking” levels of deprivatio­n, a group of Fife parents are preparing to sacrifice many of their own Christmas celebratio­ns to ensure every child has a gift from Santa this year. The Gift of Christmas Appeal Fife is about to open its warehouse for the third year for donations to ensure that the kingdom’s most disadvanta­ged youngsters enjoy some festive cheer. With child poverty soaring, trustee Kate Hope said some families were struggling to cope all year round.
