Veterans involved in new review into sale of fireworks to public

- PAUL MALIK POLITICAL EDITOR

Veterans will be involved in a review group set up by the Scottish Government into the sale of fireworks to members of the general public.

Community safety minister Ash Denham told Holyrood yesterday the government would seek to have powers devolved from Westminster, to better control their sale .

MSPS yesterday raised concerns about the impact the home rockets can have on veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The sound of fireworks, and the smell of gunpowder, can trigger panic attacks in those who have experienced conflict.

Ms Denham confirmed veterans’ representative groups would be involved in the firework review group to help steer the voices of former Armed Forces personnel in guiding new legislation.

Ms Denham said: “Fireworks can be difficult for our veterans, through the loud noises and smells. Fireworks can cause significant anguish.

“Membership of the fireworks review group is being finalised. I will ensure veterans’ organisations are engaged and veterans’ voices are heard.

“It is disappointing the UK Government has little appetite to change the legislation around the sales of fireworks.

“The recently published Commons committee report clearly states the government has failed to act or address legitimate concerns about the sale of fireworks. The report sets out a number of recommendations. I hope the UK Government would take action in that regard.

“If the head-in-the-sand approach is maintained by the next UK Government then I would certainly like to discuss how the relevant powers on the sale of fireworks could be devolved to Scotland.”

Concerns for service animals which care for veterans with PTSD were also raised by North East region Scottish Conservative MSP Bill Bowman, who said: “Research shows the immense value of therapy animals to veterans suffering from PTSD.

“These are animals which help overcome adversity.

“I think there needs to be a conversation about the modern context of fireworks and our relationship with pets.

“Having a veteran on the Fireworks Review Group would be a first step towards that.”
