ATHLETICS

BOB STARK MEMORIAL 5KM

Fife AC junior Ben Sandilands put in a ‘right royal’ performance as he finished the Bob Stark Memorial 5km (for Prostate Cancer Scotland) at Falkland Palace in 17 minutes 16 seconds.

Kirkcaldy athlete Sandilands, a winner of this event in 2017 sailed over the muddy multi-terrain course around the Falkland Estate and this only 24 hours after winning the over-17 race at the Broxburn East of Scotland Cross-country League. Finishing at the Falkland Palace gatehouse, Sandilands had 44 seconds to spare on Fife colleague Alastair Gudgin, who followed home second in 18.00. Ben Kinninmonth completed the Fife dominance of the podium positions, finishing third in 19.06 with two seconds to spare ahead of leading veteran Chris Russell (Leven Las Vegas) in fourth.

Fife AC were equally impressive in the female standings and were led home by Laura Gibson – seventh overall in a time of 19 minutes 44 seconds – while Fife recruit Anna Crawford was second female in 10th (20.14). Michaela Mclean, a member of the Fife AC Kirkcaldy Wizards training group weaved her magic to place 26th overall, first veteran timed at 22.05. For Kirriemuir athlete Addy Gerrard (Fife AC) the occasion was something of a landmark landing on the day of her 60th birthday.

Scottish veteran internationalist Gerrard, who dominated Scottish women’s road running in the 1990s, placed 43rd/first over 60 female clocking 24.17.

John Barr (Fife AC), a member of the St Columba’s Cupar running group, headed the junior one-mile in six minutes 16 seconds, having contested the East League at Broxburn on the Saturday.
