Raith focus is firmly on the league – Macdonald

LEAGUE 1: Rovers defender eyes return to summit after Kirkcaldy side’s cup exploits

- IAIN COLLIN

Kieran Macdonald has urged Raith Rovers to fix their focus firmly back on league business as they bid to return to the top of the table.

The Stark’s Park men have reached the Challenge Cup semi-final and set up a fourth round Scottish Cup clash with Livingston following wins in their last two games.

By their own admission they were below par in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Peterhead but successfully progressed to the next round.

But Macdonald is optimistic Rovers will grasp the opportunity to go back to the summit of League One with three points against Forfar tonight.

The former Hamilton, Clyde and Airdrie left-back said: “The main objective this season is to be up the top of the league and hopefully win the league, so hopefully we can take our chance against Forfar.

“The league is the most important thing for us. Obviously, it’s nice to get through in the cup games but the priority is the league, definitely.

“It was a funny game on Saturday.

Sometimes we can go out and play brilliant and end up losing, but at other times we’re not at our best and we win.

“It was the cup, so it was good to win despite not playing well, but we know ourselves we can play better and hopefully we can get back to a better performance against Forfar.

“We fancy ourselves against anybody at home, if we’re at it, and hopefully we can keep that up and get another win.”

Saturday’s victory over Peterhead brought Raith’s first clean sheet in nine weeks, dating all the way back to September 21.

Macdonald admits a repeat would be very welcome but insists Rovers’ attacking style can make shut-outs hard to come by.

The 26-year-old added: “We’re quite a forward-thinking team, so there are going to be gaps in behind us and we’re going to concede, just with the way we play.”

Rovers will make changes to their starting line-up, with experienced defender Iain Davidson and former Forfar midfielder Brad Spencer both serving suspensions.
