COVENTRY BLAZE 6 DUNDEE STARS 3

Dundee Stars woeful run of form continued as they extended their winless streak to seven after losing a nine-goal thriller in Coventry last night.

Omar Pacha’s side were beaten 6-3 by Blaze after a good comeback attempt came up just short.

Stars, who were still missing the injured Kris Inglis and Shawn Boutin, had chances early on to open the scoring but failed to trouble Jamie Phllips in the Blaze goal.

Coventry began to settle and went ahead when Luke Ferrara pounced on a rebound to fire it past Alex Leclerc on seven minutes.

Danny Stewart’s men quickly forced another error and Johnny Curran slipped past defender Brett Stovin before making it 2-0. Coventry added a third in the 11th minute as Justin Hache’s rocket shot blasted through traffic and into the top of the net.

Stars slowly found their feet and managed to stop the onslaught to keep the score at 3-0 going into the first break.

The home team made another lively start to the second period and more than a minute into a powerplay Coventry added a fourth through Ross Venus.

Justin Maylan came close to reducing the leeway for Stars before Egils Kalns hit a smart shot off the pads of Blaze goaltender Jamie Phillips and the puck landed kindly for Elgin Pearce to tap home in 29 minutes.

Stars took control for a spell but still trailed by three goals after two periods.

However, the visitors came out firing in the final period and Dundee reduced the lead to 4-2 after just 39 seconds.

Stovin hit a slapshot from just inside the blueline but it went wide of the target, although the shot bounced off the end boards and came straight to Dundee’s Drydn Dow, who applied a simple finish.

Pacha’s men continued their heavy offensive push and were rewarded with a third goal through Dufour on 45 minutes.

Blaze responded and swiftly pulled a goal back through Venus to restore their two-goal cushion and with Dundee throwing everything forward Coventry made it 6-3 when Dillon Lawrence scored in the 52nd minute.

Stars, who face Nottingham Panthers in back-to-back games this week, will be boosted by the signing of forward Alex Schoenborn.

● Fife Flyers completed a pointless weekend last night when they were beaten 5-2 at home by Guildford Flames.

Danick Gauthier opened the scoring after four minutes but Ian Watters levelled 21 seconds later. Carlo Finucci scored Fife’s second only for Flyers to collapse during the third period. Flames netted four goals in 16 minutes from TJ Foster, Ben Davies, Watters and Brett Ferguson on the empty net.

On Saturday Flyers took an early lead at Sheffield Steelers through James Livingston but goals from Eric Meland, Marc-olivier Vallerand and Anthony Deluca made it 3-1.

Carlo Fuccini pulled one back after 36 minutes but goals from Vallerand, Michael Davies and Robert Dowd ended the contest.
