The Church of Scotland is committed to approach the Government for legislation with a view to union with the United Free Church. That step was taken by a Commission of the National Church Assembly in Edinburgh yesterday; yet there was not the same unanimity as characterised the Assembly in May last. The vote was 219 for, with 36 against, and the speakers for the protesters made quite a good show. They based their case on the fact that the Kirk Sessions and the people have not been consulted.

Forfar magistrates last night decided to come heavily on vandals and rowdies at week-end dances in the Reid Hall when they approved a seven-point plan to combat trouble at the dances. The magistrates agreed that promoters should co-ordinate their precautionary measures against bad behaviour and hoped that they would hold a meeting shortly to approve their (the magistrates’) recommendations. A common list of troublemakers is proposed and any blacklisted person causing trouble should be barred.

The Fife village of Cairneyhill, near Dunfermline, was in shock last night after armed raiders robbed the owner of the local shop at gunpoint. Two men wearing ski masks burst into Cairneyhill Village Store, in Main Street, and forced owner Peter Connor to hand over around £2,000 in cash. One of the men was carrying a revolver and both were wearing casual clothes and jeans. They were in the store for just seconds before making their escape in an old style Vauxhall Cavalier. Mr Connor appears to be over the worst of the shock.

Generous Dundonians have shown their festive caring side by donating a tonne of goods to a foodbank in just three hours. Dundee Foodbank held its annual warehouse open day and staff were stunned by the response. A total of 993kg of food was handed into the Dunsinane Avenue lifeline, more than double the amount donated on the same day last year. Manager Ken Linton said: “The people of Dundee have always been incredibly generous but this really was overwhelming.”
