Wilson delighted to bring in former Rangers player

Brechin City have made their third signing of the transfer window with the recruitment of central midfielder Rhys Mccabe from Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic.

The former Scotland Under-21 international has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season.

Mccabe is a product of the youth set-up at Rangers and made nine appearances for the first team before leaving Ibrox in 2012.

He joined Sheffield Wednesday and went on to make 36 appearances for the Owls, while also spending time on loan at Portsmouth.

He subsequently signed for Dunfermline, where he made 51 appearances over two seasons.

City boss Mark Wilson said: “We’re delighted to have someone of his calibre on board to try to help us in our fight to avoid relegation.

“Rhys is someone with top experience in the game and has played at a number of high-profile clubs including Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and more recently at St Patrick’s Athletic, where he experienced European football.

“He fitted all of the criteria we were looking for – an experienced player and a great leader and talker, as well as being a good footballer.

“He will certainly bolster our squad and it’s a real lift for the players and supporters in the last few days of the transfer window.

“It’s been a tough window to get people in but it just shows that if you are patient and put the work in, you can get the top players and in Rhys Mccabe I think we’ve got that.”
