Fonwilliams sets sights on play-offs

-

Owain Fon Williams has targeted a promotion push after joining Dunfermline on loan from Hamilton for the remainder of the season.

The 32-year-old, who has made 21 appearances for Accies this term, will go straight into the Pars squad to face Queen of the South tomorrow.

“I had a great experience at hamilton and I have always done my best – there are no bad feelings,” said Fon Williams.

“I am lucky that Brian Rice gave me this opportunity to come here and talk to Dunfermline. I am grateful for that.

“The main thing for me is to finish the season strong here. Collectively, hopefully we can push on and get into the play-offs.”

With more than 400 senior appearances under his belt for the likes of Stockport, Rochdale, Indy Eleven and Inverness, Fon Williams immediately becomes youthful Dunfermline’s most senior player.

He boasts one full cap and was a member of the Wales squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

And Pars boss Stevie Crawford has candidly confirmed that Fon Williams is not coming to Fife to warm the bench.

“The brutal reality is that he will be coming here to start games of football,” said Crawford.

“Like anybody, if the form is not there then we would be looking at possibly having to change it, but I don’t foresee that being something that we have to worry about with Owain.

“It’s obviously a difficult situation for Cammy Gill and Ryan Scully, with another experienced keeper coming in, but I am sure they will get their heads down, get on with it and compete for that number one jersey.

“When we found out that there was an opportunity to bring Owain in, we just felt that it was right for us to try and climb this league.”

Dunfermline have also added Dom Thomas, Ethan Ross and Jonathan Afolabi to their ranks this month – but it is understood they are still hopeful of completing more business before the transfer window slams shut.

While Crawford admits January is an exhausting time of the year, he is adamant all the effort is worthwhile in the end.

“I have been on the Pro Licence and it tries to prepare you for everything, but it can’t prepare you for this,” he said.

“It is difficult because all these different factors have got to come together to make it work.

“A lot of time and effort goes into it. Not just with myself–you are constantly talking to your coaching staff.

“It is challenging, it is time consuming, but I love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I am lucky to have got people round about me who want what is best for this club.

“My relationship is great with (chairman) Ross Mcarthur, as well, which is important.

“It is sometimes a tiring job but you get a lot of pleasure out of it when you manage to bring the right player in. That has always got to be your focus.”

● East Fife have snapped up midfielder Callumn Morrison on loan from Hearts.

Morrison, 20, will join the Fifers for the rest of this season’s League One campaign.

He joined the Jam Tarts in 2015 and has also had loan spells at Stirling Albion and Brechin City.

Morrison broke into the Tynecastle first team last season and went on to make 35 appearances.

He has been capped at under-17 level for Scotland.
