HAWKINS FINISHES THIRD IN JAPAN

-

ATHLETICS

Callum Hawkins (Kilbarchan) clocked 60 minutes, 01 seconds to finish third in the Marugame Half Marathon in Japan.

The time was one second outside of his own Scottish best performance for the distance.

Brett Robinson clocked a winning 59.57 to set an Australian record.

Fife AC over-80 veteran George Black set two Scottish age group records at the Scottish Veteran Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. Black, who already set an over-80 veteran four-mile world record already this year, as well as a UK Parkrun over-80 record, contested the indoor 800m and 1,500m. An 800m finish of three minutes 32.03 seconds revised the previous best of 3:52.47 set in 2006 while a 1,500m clocking of 7:17.64 was well inside the former record of 7:52.47, also dating back to 2006. Dundee Hawkhill’s Mike Tarnawsky celebrated 200m and 400m wins in the over-45 veteran age group. BRITISH/COLLEGES CROSS-COUNTRY

Mahamed Mahamed (Southampton Solent) and Anna Emilie Møller (St Mary’s) headed class fields as 2,000 students converged on Holyrood Park in Edinburgh for the British/ Colleges Cross-country Championships.

Mahamed won the men’s ‘A’ 10km in a time of 32 minutes, 06 seconds. He was followed home by GB hill internationalist Joe Steward (Bangor) in 32.43.

Irish internationalist Jayme Rossiter (Aston Univ.) snatched third from Daniel Jarvis (St Mary’s), with both sharing a time of 32.50.

Jarvis, however, had the consolation of leading St Mary’s to team gold. Meanwhile Perth Strathtay athlete Sol Sweeney, representing Glasgow University, finished eighth, the leading performance in the men’s race by a Scot.

Sweeney moved his way through the field over the opening two laps, sitting in ninth over the final two circuits. A spirited final effort saw the GB U23 internationalist sprint to eighth at the finish line timed at 33.05. Jack Leitch, in 12th, overhauled Edinburgh University colleague Alex Chepelin, in 25th, one place behind Stirling’s Hamish Hickey in 24th. Danish Olympian Anna Emilie Møller (St Mary’s) dominated the women’s ‘A’ race. The 2019 European U23 Crosscountry champion made light of the gusting winds to finish in 28 minutes 03 seconds – 46 seconds ahead of runner-up, GB internationalist Jessica Judd (Loughborough) in 28.49. Jenny Nesbitt (Cardiff Met.) was third in 29.22 while Eloise Walker was eighth for Glasgow University in 29.49. Holly Page led home hosts Edinburgh University in 18th in 31.10. Judd’s performance took Loughborough to the team title ahead of St Mary’s.

Joe Wigfield won the men’s 8km ‘B’ race, while Grace Carson (Loughborough) won the women’s ‘B’ 6km race Selected results, Emirates Arena, Glasgow. Scottish Indoor Pentathlon championships. HOCKEY

GROVE TOO GOOD

Grove Menzieshill proved too good for Dunfermline Carnegie as expected to confirm their semi-final place in the Men’s Indoor National League Division 1.

Albert Rowling netted three and Jamie Golden two in their 9-5 win. Dundee Wanderers came from behind against Uddingston, conceding two early goals, but the game was tied at 2-2 and 3-3 before Wanderers conceded two more. A fourth goal proved insufficient for Wanderers as they lost 5-4 but they still progressed to the semi-finals in second place.

Callum Ross netted twice for Wanderers.

Inverleith only drew 2-2 with Western Wildcats but again that did not prevent them advancing in pole position in Pool A.

The semi-finals were the real contests but the supremacy of Menzieshill and Inverleith told. There was little to choose between Menzieshill and Grange in the first three quarters as Menzieshill only led by 3-1, being unable to convert a few other scoring opportunities.

The last quarter saw Menzieshill stretch their lead for a 6-2 win. Albert Rowling claimed a hat-trick with Luke Cranney, Euan Cuthill and Cammy Golden adding one each. The first half between Inverleith and Wanderers was relatively close, Inverleith establishing a 3-1 lead, but it could really have been closer. But Inverleith eased away in the third quarter to take a 5-2 lead and finished 7-3 winners, Elliot Sandison scoring two and Sean Dowie one for Wanderers.
