Late double leaves Brechin facing up to must-win trip

-

Brechin’s relegation worries deepened after they went down to a 2-1 defeat against Elgin City at Glebe Park.

Brechin had gone in at the interval 1-0 ahead after deadline day signing Martin Scott slotted home in the 29th minute and, as the second half wore on, it looked as if they would hold on to collect three crucial points,

However, late goals from Shane Sutherland and substitute Smart Osodolar left the hosts shell-shocked and they now face a must-win match on Saturday against second bottom Albion Rovers, who are six points clear of City having played two games fewer.

Manager Mark Wilson was philosophical about his team’s performance and the task facing them.

“To be totally honest, I felt we got what we deserved today,” he said.

“I know that we went in at half-time 1-0 up but I didn’t think that we were the better side at all.

“We made changes during the interval to try and get a foothold in the middle of the pitch where Elgin were causing us problems but the players weren’t good enough.

“I’ve defended the players for their performances when they’ve not got what they deserved but today was the opposite.

“We retreated into our own box, we looked tired, we didn’t control the ball well enough and we got punished for it.

“To be ahead and then lose a goal shortly towards the end was disappointing but to not be able to see the game out for a point by losing a further goal was a really sore one to take.

“Albion Rovers are now six points ahead and we’ve simply got to start chipping away at that.”

● Cowdenbeath went down 1-0 to Queen’s Park at Hampden with new boy Craig Slater netting the only goal.
