Two ‘serious’ in hospital after Fife accidents

Pedestrian fighting for life after Glenrothes incident, and man badly hurt as car and van collide near Cupar

A 27-year-old man was fighting for his life and a 68-year-old man was badly hurt in two serious accidents on Fife roads just hours apart.

The younger man was involved in a collision with a car as he crossed a street in Glenrothes on Thursday night.

The other man was seriously injured in a collision between a van and car near Cupar just before noon yesterday.

The pedestrian was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where his condition was said to be critical.

The 42-year-old man driving the silver Vauxhall Vectra which was involved in the incident on Formonthills Road at around 8.25pm was unhurt.

Police investigating the incident, which saw the road closed between Pitcoudie roundabout and Ballingall Drive for several hours, appealed to any motorists with dash-cam footage of the moments before it occurred to get in touch.

Sergeant Ewan Pearce, of the road policing unit, said: “Although we have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area and who assisted at the crash last night, we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have dash-cam footage just before the crash happened.”

The incident did not occur at a zebra crossing which people had voiced safety concerns about.

However, North Glenrothes

Community Council said the crossing was one of a number of aspects of road safety concern in the area.

Member Denise Wallace said: “It is poorly lit in that area.

“Our thoughts are with all those involved and their close family and friends.”

Meanwhile, firefighters had to cut a casualty free from a vehicle in the incident on the A91 between Cupar and Dairsie.

The man who was hurt was taken to Ninewells Hospital with injuries which police said were not life-threatening.

The road was closed all afternoon to allow investigations following the collision at around 11.50am.

Shortly after it occurred a police spokesman said: “Emergency services are in attendance following a serious road crash on the A91 between Cupar and Dairsie between a van and a car.

“A 68-year-old man has been taken to Ninewells Hospital with serious injuries.”

Meanwhile, another accident in the region yesterday morning closed the A92 for more than two hours.

Two vehicles collided at Rathillet at around 9.30am.

No one is believed to have been seriously hurt in that incident.
