ALBION ROVERS V BRECHIN

Brechin City fans have done all they can to aid the club’s SPFL survival bid.

Now it’s time for the players to show the same resolve.

Manager Mark Wilson stopped short of describing today’s trip to Albion Rovers as a ‘must win’ game but only just.

The Glebe Park side are six points adrift of second-bottom Rovers at the League Two basement and that gap opening up to nine doesn’t bear thinking about.

There are times when performance is nearly as important as result but today is certainly not one of them.

“I don’t like the term must win,” said Wilson.

“But we’ve got to take something. You could say it’s a must not lose.

“The gap is there and there is no hiding from it.

“It was a real kick in the teeth to lose last weekend after being 1-0 up with nine minutes to go.

“We didn’t play our best but we should have seen the game out and taken a point at the very least.

“It’s no good saying; ‘unlucky’. We need to show the right mentality.

“It won’t be about who plays the nicest football tomorrow.

“The weather forecast is poor and the pitch won’t be the best. We need to be ready for a tough afternoon.”

Wilson targeted “strong characters” in January and he believes that the four men he brought in fit that description.

He also still hopes to recruit a defender with his last loan deal.

Wilson wanted to put on record his appreciation of the supporters who have backed him and the club with their hardearned money.

“I’d like to thank the people of Brechin for putting their hands in their pockets and giving us a fighting chance,” he said.

“In mid-december the chairman appealed for a fighting fund. The supporters have reacted brilliantly to it.

“They have raised an incredible amount of money which has helped us get players in. Anybody who we missed out on wasn’t because of finance.

“Somebody knocked on the chairman’s door with a cheque, others were bringing £40 or £50 to games.

“I think there was even one donation of £1,000.

“It shows what this club means to the town and to the people.”

Meanwhile, Matthew Knox was released yesterday. He is expected to move to Sweden.

Wilson said: “Matthew clearly has ability but for one reason or another it didn’t work out for him here.”
