An estimated 30,000 Dundee holidaymakers with a spending power of between £1 and £2 million will leave the city this weekend. Yesterday’s vanguard were glad to leave the torrential rain behind them as they headed (hopefully) for the sun. British Rail will augment all regular services from Tay Bridge Station and provide relief trains. Extra services to the north will cope with the finish of the Aberdeen holidays. Holidays, of course, cost money and there was an early queue at the Dundee Savings Bank in Meadowside.

Jubilant Broughty Ferry traders are to hold a street party to celebrate the re-opening of the Gray Street level crossing. Shopkeepers on both sides of the crossing are planning to set tables outside their stores when they close on Tuesday to mark the last day of the gates being closed, said Broughty Ferry Traders Association committee member Gerry Stewart. “We campaigned long and hard for the gates to re-open,” she said. “We think it will make a great difference because people do not like using the underpass.”

A glazier went home “saturated with blood” after coming across two teenage girls who had been struck by a van in a hit and run in Perthshire. The two friends were struck outside the village of Rait, between Perth and Dundee. They had been walking along the road to catch a bus when struck and were taken to Ninewells Hospital. Ian Rodger and Mike Wilson were returning home when they came across the girls by the roadside. Former fireman Ian, from Cupar, stayed with them until the emergency services arrived.
