Impact on rural economy to be probed

- NEIL POORAN

A Scottish Parliament committee is seeking views on the financial impact of Covid-19 on the rural economy and transport.

MSPS on the rural economy and connectivity committee have issued a call for evidence as they examine the financial implications of the pandemic.

They will also examine whether Brexit is “likely to pose additional challenges for the rural economy” as it recovers from Covid-19.

The committee’s remit extends to transport, with the MSPS also seeking views on whether additional financial support is needed by certain operators while social distancing measures are in place.

It is also looking for evidence on how active travel can be promoted beyond the lockdown.

Committee convener Edward Mountain said: “There is little doubt the pandemic has affected every sector of Scotland’s economy.

“But for some areas, as we have already heard, these effects have been particularly significant.

“For sectors including transport and fisheries, there have been immediate impacts.

“In other key areas of the rural economy, such as agriculture, there are also long-term implications and challenges to consider.”

He added: “The committee wants to hear from those most affected about how public spending needs to change to address these challenges.

“What support would make a real impact?

“What are the urgent priorities and what should be the longer term financial strategy to deliver a sustainable recovery in Scotland’s transport systems, digital connectivity and the rural economy?”

The committee will be open to receiving evidence up to September 18.
